Hydrus Microstent

What Is Hydrus Microstent?

The Hydrus Microstent is a tiny, flexible medical device designed to help lower eye pressure in people with mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma. About the size of an eyelash, this innovative stent is placed inside the eye’s drainage canal (Schlemm’s canal) to improve the outflow of fluid and reduce intraocular pressure (IOP). It is often performed at the same time as cataract surgery for added convenience and efficiency.

Who It's For

Ideal candidates are adults diagnosed with mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma who are seeking a safe, effective, and minimally invasive way to manage their condition — often with the goal of reducing or eliminating daily eye drops.

Stable Glaucoma Diagnosis

Stable Glaucoma Diagnosis

Candidates should have a stable prescription for glasses or contact lenses for at least one year. This stability helps ensure the best long-term results from the procedure.

Age 18 & Above

This treatment is approved for adult patients and offers a modern, minimally invasive solution that can be combined with cataract surgery for added benefit.

Healthy Ocular Structure

Healthy Ocular Structure

A strong corneal structure and an open drainage angle are essential for the procedure to work safely and effectively.

Can provide long-term intraocular pressure control with proper follow-up care.

How the Procedure Works

Your treatment starts with a thorough glaucoma evaluation to determine if the Hydrus Microstent is the best option for you. If you are also having cataract surgery, both procedures are typically performed together.

Pre-Procedure Evaluation

(20–30 minutes)

Pre-Procedure Evaluation

A complete eye exam and specialized glaucoma testing will be performed to map your eye’s drainage system and confirm candidacy.

Microstent Placement

(10–15 minutes)

Microstent Placement

Using a high-precision surgical microscope, your surgeon inserts the tiny Hydrus Microstent through a micro-incision into Schlemm’s canal, opening it for better fluid drainage.

Healing & Follow-Up

(Several days to weeks)

Healing & Follow-Up

Your eye will begin healing right away, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort. Follow-up visits will ensure proper healing and IOP control.

I am very impressed with West Texas Eye Associates. My first appointment was with Dr. Bradley to determine that I was a candidate for cataract surgery and lenses. I was scheduled for surgery on both eyes with Dr. Shehz. One eye then 2 weeks the other eye. Both surgeries went as planned, were painless, quick and no recovery time. I had no issues seeing and had immediate results. Over the next week it got even better. The front desk staff was very efficient and friendly , the eye techs were all friendly and efficient, and the Doctors are well trained, explained the procedure in detail and provided excellent care. I could not be more pleased with the entire process and my new vision. I highly recommend West Texas Eye Associates to anyone with eye issues.
