What is Astigmatism?
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people have astigmatism, a refractive error in which the shape of the cornea (the outer layer of the eye) is skewed, prohibiting light that enters the eye to focus directly onto the retina (the back later of the eye). Rather than being an ideal round shape, the cornea is football shaped so light entering the eyes can land in front of or behind the retina, causing blurry vision. In the past, astigmatism could not be corrected by laser vision correction so patients were forced to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses to see clearly.
Lasers for Astigmatism Correction in Dallas
Today, advances in laser vision correction technology allow patients with astigmatism (with or without accompanying nearsightedness or farsightedness) to achieve clear vision – even 20/20 vision for some patients. Procedures like iLASIK or PRK are performed to reshape the cornea to achieve a rounder shape. Only minuscule amounts of corneal tissue typically need to be removed with a laser. Amazingly, the process only takes minutes to complete, but the results can be life-changing.
Custom Astigmatism Treatment in Dallas
Prior to a laser vision correction procedure at Vision Quest, our team performs a series of tests using WaveScan technology to create a 3D map of the unique characteristics and imperfections of your eye anatomy that are causing your refractive error. This digital information is placed into our Advanced CustomVue process that is used for your treatment.
During our blade-free iLASIK, we use IntraLase technology to create a thin corneal flap to allow access to the underlying tissue. In contrast, there is no flap created for the PRK procedure. Instead, a thin layer of epithelium tissue is gently removed to allow that same level of access to the underlying tissue.
With the cornea prepared, astigmatism, nearsightedness and/or farsightedness can be corrected using the Advanced CustomVue treatment. Some patients start seeing better right after the procedure; however, full vision improvement may take several days/weeks.

You may be a good candidate for laser vision correction if you:
- Are at least 21 years old
- Have good overall health
- Have had a stable, valid vision prescription for at least one year
- Are free from eye disease
